Some devotees stick to fruits, coconut water, and juices alone on all the six days. Devotees take the only single meal on the days either the lunch or the dinner. Devotees visit as many Subrahmanya temples as they can during the vrat. Some people even avoid garlic and onions. Non-vegetarian food is strictly not allowed on these days. Subrahmanya Sashti Fasting Rules The fasting can be observed for six days or one day depending on the convenience of the devotee. Puja is done with the offering of flowers, incense, sandal paste, vermilion, turmeric powder and Prasad of the devotee’s choice and concludes with the chanting of Skanda shashti kavacham, Subrahmanya Bhujangam or the reading of Skanda Purana or stories connected to Lord Muruga. In some houses, the spear or Vel, the divine weapon of Muruga is installed on a pedestal symbolizing Lord Subrahmanya himself and the puja is conducted. Wake up early in the morning, take holy bath and set up the altar with the images or idols of Lord Ganesh and Subrahmanya. Usually, the puja lasts for six days starting from the Prathama Thith (the next day of Amavasya or no moon day) and concludes on the Sashti thithi (sixth day of the lunar month during the waxing phase).
